Methodology:
There is a lot of logical methods to solve this kind of questions, but here we use a Technique called "Backward Thinking". This method is simple as we are going to derive the answer starting from the last statement of the question backwards. Lets Deal it with some Examples, it will help us in understanding this concepts great,
Example 1:
Pointing to a man in a photograph, a woman said “His brother’s father is the only son of my grandfather”. How is the woman related to the man in the photograph?
(1) Mother (2) Aunt (3) Sister (4) Daughter (5) Grandmother
The relation may be seen as follows.
Step 1: The only son of the woman’s grandfather-----> Woman’s Father.
Here the keyword is Only son which describes that the person is women's father.
Step 2: Man’s brother’s father-Man’s father.
Step 3: So from Step (1) and (2) the woman is the Man’s sister.
Example 2:
Introducing a girl, Santhosh said, “Her mother is the only daughter of my mother-in-law”. How is Santhosh related to the girl?
(1) Uncle (2) Husband (3) Brother (4) Father (5) None of these
The relation may be seen as follows.
Step 1: Only daughter of mother-in-law -----> Wife.
i.e.girl’s mother is Santosh’s wife.
Step 2: So Santhosh is the Father of the girl.
Directions(Example 3) Read the following information and answer the questions given below:
- A + B means A is the daughter of B
- A × B means A is the son of B
- A - B means A is the wife of B
Example 3:
If P × Q - S, which of the following is true?
(a) S is the wife of Q (b) S is father of P (c) P is daughter of Q (d) Q is father of P (e) None of these
The relation may be seen as follows.
Step 1: Q - S means Q is the wife of S.
Step 2: P × Q means P is the son of Q.
The Possibilities are
- S is the Husband of Q.
- Q is the Mother of P
- S is the Father of P
- P is the son of S and Q
